Based on a book and part of the World Masterpiece Theater franchise, it was impossible to not fall in love with the main protagonist Judy.

Next is Tamako Market, the recent Kyoto Animation series about a family of mochi makers in a shopping center. I love KyoAni and I love their moe shows, but this one fell a little short for me. The characters lacked that spark that makes the casts of K-ON! and Lucky Star so engaging, and by the time the chemistry started working really well, the show ended. It was still a good show but a disappointment by KyoAni standards.

Third is Sasami-san@Ganbaranai, a Shaft show that by my account wasn't received too well, but it has its good points. All of the standard Shaft and Akiyuki Shinbo tricks are present but in a more subdued way, and I really liked the alternative ways they structured some episodes. I want to see more of the world they presented, but I somehow doubt there'll be more animated.

Lastly, we have Little Busters!, the latest offering from Key, about a group of childhood friends. I came into it with zero expectations and I have no experience with the source material. I had completely forgotten about Key's patent for 'Sad Girls in Snow', so when the drama started, the gut-punch was hard. Now I'm waiting for the second season to hopefully resolve things because I liked the cast.

The end result is twenty six new characters, so hug your mothers and then get to voting!

Friendship wins! Flawless victory.

The power of friendship can conquer all, from invading aliens to societal prejudices. Such is the case in our latest update, featuring the girls of Kotoura-san and Vividred Operation!

Kotoura-san is a charming little anime about a girl with the psychic ability to read minds, and how the power of friendship helps her come to terms with her ability and shows her that she doesn't have to be alone in the world because of it.

Vividred Operation is a lighthearted action comedy that some people have called 'Strike Witches meets Nanoha'. All I can say is it was a fun watch that mashes up sentai shows, magical girl transformation sequences, high tech power suits, and symmetrical docking. And at least one beam cannon.

Be these girls' friend too, and go vote for them! It doesn't take a mindreader to know you already want to!

Also, we have a new poll! Our last poll asked about your favorite Yuki Kajiura soundtrack, and it looks like many of you have already made a contract with Kyubey, as 'Puella Magi Madoka Magica' wins with over 40% of you voting for it.

Our new poll will be looking at which hot-and-cold girl alternatively beats you into submission and lovingly tends to your wounds thereafter. That's right, it's a poll about tsunderes. But you don't have to vote. We only put that poll up for ourselves, it's n-not like we like y-you or anything...

Baka.

Adjective Noun Name

I totally didn't know what I was getting into when I had the idea for this entry, which would focus on titles that follow the common naming convention of 'Adjective Noun Name'. Higher profile examples include Revolutionary Girl Utena and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm too pooped to provide even basic character descriptions, so here's a list of series we've added that follow this convention at least reasonably closely:

Emma: A Victorian Romance (Japanese name of Victorian Romance Emma)

Mao-chan (Japanese name of Ground Defense Force Mao-chan)

Explorer Woman Ray

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie

Blue Submarine No. 6

Animation Runner Kuromi

Demon City Shinjuku

Penguin Musume Heart

Idol Defense Force Hummingbird

All told, that's 55 new characters. While it may have taken a while to get out, there's plenty of new girls who need votes!

The God in the Machine

Today brings a trio of series that deal with technology, deities, or a combination of both. First up is the recent Sword Art Online. I'm not ready to declare it the 'second coming' like many were, but it was a very impressive series with strong characters and an interesting take on the social and psychological effects of being trapped in a deadly fantasy world. It's almost like what .hack had the potential to be without the metaphysical aspects weighing it down.

Next is Kamichu!, an insanely relaxing and emotionally gentle slice of life series about a middle school student who wakes up one morning and realizes that she has become a god. Yurie is moe before moe was a thing, and it's hard to not want to hug her and never let go.

Last is Kamisama Dolls, a series that came out of nowhere for me and impressed me with how much I got into it. Mysterious power struggles between two families in an isolated village, strange gods in the form of large wooden dolls that are mentally controlled by a select group of people...I came into the series without knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.

In site news, I have ended the first official poll and put up a new one. Sailor Moon was far and away the favorite inner senshi, leading with 14 votes to Sailor Jupiter's second place with 9 votes, which kind of surprised me. Thanks to all who voted and I hope you like the new poll!

Playing Favorites

This Sunday afternoon brings you an update with series from a number of my favorite animation studios - all that's missing is Shaft, but with the second Monogatari season coming in July, at least I have that to look forward to.

First we have Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean, from Studio Bones. My favorite Bones series is Eureka Seven, so I had high expectations for this series, and for the most part I wasn't disappointed. It had enough of a new feel to it with just the right amount of callbacks to the original series that it was fresh while still feeling connected to the world established in the original series.

Next up is the series with a mouthful of a title, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. This romantic comedy by Kyoto Animation covers all the bases that make the studio so beloved for its moe titles: beautiful artwork and animation, adorable girls, and a well-crafted sense of timing for when to punch up the drama over the comedy and vice versa.

Next up we have a couple new characters from Studio Gainax's Medaka Box Abnormal. With character intros and random single-episode stories out of the way, this sequel focuses on a specific story arc and turns up the drama, action, and ridiculous powers. It clicked a lot faster for me than the first season did.

Lastly, we have a pleasant four episode OAV called One Off, about a group of moped-riding girls living in a small country town and the bombastic foreigner who arrives and adds excitement to their lives.

In site development news, since we pushed out the new version of the site, we've implemented Facebook likes, made most tables sortable via javascript, and added a new section to the stats called 'Fun Statistics' with random stats that we'll be adding to over time. Have fun!
