The franchise is one of those 90s anime properties that really define the period - especially the first OAV with its beautiful animation and typically 90s character design. I was only moderately aware of it way back when because of its consideration as a 'sister series' to Tenchi Muyo, but only recently got around to watching it and really enjoyed it. The retooling some of the characters got in its transition from OAV to TV took a bit getting used to - except for the bumbling, incompetent Ifurita who I liked immediately. Twelve more girls are up for voting, and now I'll get back to watching the rain.

Noblesse Oblige

Ignoring my being single on Valentine's Day, I've put up two entries this afternoon. The first is of an excellent recent series called Eden of the East. I remember hearing a lot of positive buzz about it when it came out last year but only recently did I get around to watching it, and now I'm really looking forward to the movies. The animation and set design is gorgeous, the chemistry between the protagonists feels natural, and it presents some interesting ideas on technology, people, and the roles of both in society.

The goals of today's second entry aren't quite as lofty. Mugen Shinshi - Boken Katsugeki Hen, an obscure one-shot OAV from 1987, follows the story of a child detective, his demonically strong butler, and the case they investigate of young girls being kidnapped by stereotypically Chinese villians. While not anything special, I love this kind of stuff just because of its obscurity and because it's an interesting look back in time.

First Submission!

Tonight we have a special treat: Our first submission from somebody other than staff! A fine individual by the name of Five_X has submitted eleven rather cute girls for a Strike Witches entry, and I've put that entry up tonight. To be perfectly realistic, I expected to never actually receive submissions and just have the site's staff put everything up itself. I'd also be totally fine with that, but it's gratifying that others are willing to put in some work to make the site better. Honestly in this case, the images in the submission could have been better so I replaced them with better quality versions, keeping them as similar as possible to keep them in the same spirit. (Remember that staff reserves the right to fix spelling and grammar, fix images, and mix and match submissions from people as deemed necessary, but all contributions will be equally credited.)

Now that we have our first submission, I've created the Submission Credits page to credit this one and all future ones. Thanks again, Five_X!

Totally Takahashi

Tonight brings another compilation-style entry which includes material from one of the best creators in the industry, Rumiko Takahashi. Comprised of four of the classic Rumic World OAVs - Laughing Target, Fire Tripper, Maris the Chojo, and One Pound Gospel - and Mermaid Saga, which is itself composed of the other two Rumic World OAVs Mermaid's Scar and Mermaid Forest as well as the Mermaid Forest TV series, fourteen more girls are now included on the site.

Anthology stories like the Mermaid Forest series and Shinigami no Ballad always give me trouble because it's hard for me to gauge which of the characters are important enough to include when most of them are only present in an episode or two, but in Mermaid Forest's case I gave them the benefit of the doubt and included most of them. I had a lot of fun watching Maris the Choujo and One Pound Gospel in particular, but they're all good. The violence in Mermaid's Scar is still brutal even by today's standards, but like most of Takashi's work, it largely withstands the test of time.

Head Bangingly Fun

The beginning of another weekend brings us another entry: Detroit Metal City, the tale of a good natured, thoughtful, polite young man who finds himself the leader of Japan's most popular death metal band of the same name (or DMC for short). He must juggle his daily life - and sometimes his own personality - between the death metal world and his world as a college graduate who pines for a life of playing pop music and dating his college crush. As expected, hilarity ensues. That Japanese people gratuitously cursing in English is unexpectedly funny in an awkward way is just icing on the cake.
