Panadero Strikes Back

by Panadero - July 20, 2013 10:08:36 AM MST

Not to be outdone by Prince Io, I've returned with an update of my own, containing both older and newer series.

First is the recent Red Data Girl, the newest P.A. Works series about a girl possessed by a powerful spirit. While it was just as beautiful as most P.A. Works series are, I was very disappointed by the compacted nature of the story and for some reason the reactions the characters had to the events around them just didn't feel impactful enough to me.

Next we have the excellent Flowers of Evil, about a boy getting blackmailed by a girl when she witnesses him fondling the gym clothes of his crush. Once I got past the initial shock of the art and rotoscoping, the series blew away any expectations I had for it.

Next up is HENNEKO - The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat, which was also surprisingly good. It was an easy decision for me to give it a shot given I love all Kantoku art, but the moments of seriousness and gravity, when combined with the humor, validated my choice.

Then we have the super fun Skip Beat!, a story of a girl who enters show business purely as a means to get revenge on her celebrity friend (and crush) when she learns he's just been using her. Kyoko's drive to succeed and the imagery of her wild imagination were amusing throughout.

Next is the ridiculous Those Who Hunt Elves, about a group of people transported to a fantasy world who must strip elves to collect spell fragments that will return them home. Even though I've been watching anime since the early 90s, watching 90s anime at this point feels awfully foreign at times with its faster pace and higher level of manic energy.

A case in point of that is the last series Gokudo, which arrived at the end of the 90s. A fantasy-themed comedy that covers all sorts of mythology, we follow Gokudo - one of the most crass and selfish protagonists ever - through a series of misadventures. This series and Those Who Hunt Elves, combined, made me realize just how much yelling there was in series from that time. Everybody is so loud!

All in all, there are 28 more girls to vote on as we inch ever closer to our 2,000 character landmark!
